On Saturday 8th February there was surely a unique event in the 850 year history of St. Mary’s church. The New Elizabethan Singers were performing Karl Jenkins’ ‘The Armed Man: A Mass for Peace’. The concert marked the beginning of a busy year of events to commemorate the beginning of the Great War in 1914.
Part of the work includes the Muslim Call to Prayer, heard coming from mosques throughout the world five times a day as the faithful are called to worship. Anas Albow from the Bournemouth Islamic Centre and Central Mosque stood in St. Andrew’s Chapel, above the entrance to St. Mary’s church and sang the Call, his clear voice resonating throughout the building. It was an amazing moment. The concert was, as always, extremely well attended and it is a delight for the church to be used for the benefit of the cultural life of the community of Bridport. The NES will be next performing at St. Mary’s in May when they will sing both Mozart’s Requiem and Hayden’s Nelson Mass.
