A group of students from Weymouth College (at Poundbury) visited St. Mary’s in Bridport recently. The students are learning to become stone masons and were looking at the variety, styles and techniques used by masons of generations ago when making headstones and stone memorials. The burial ground around the church has headstones and box tombs dating back to the late Seventeenth Century and right up to modern day plaques on plots of cremated remains. The project aims to replicate the carvings in modern stone. This is a great example of the church networking with other local institutions to offer its premises and heritage in a relevant way for today.
